Ryan Program Training Site

The IU OB/GYN Residency program is a designated Ryan Program Training Site.  The Ryan Program, founded in 1999, is a national initiative based at the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco. The mission of this national program is to integrate and enhance family planning training for obstetrics and gynecology residents in the United States and Canada.

As family planning and contraception are fundamental to Women’s Health, this is incorporated throughout the 4 year residency program.  Residents begin this education as early as intern orientation, learning the various techniques for the placement of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC).  Additionally, they participate in a values clarification exercise that allows them to fully explore their personal role in the Family Planning experience.

A formal Family Planning rotation is part of the PGY-2 curriculum.  Each week of the 5-week rotation includes sessions with Adolescent Medicine Faculty clinics, the resident continuity clinic at the county hospital, and multiple sessions at Planned Parenthood (PP).  Experience gained at PP includes colposcopy, LEEP, complicated IUD placement and removal, and contraceptive implant placement and removal.  The experience will also include hysteroscopic tubal sterilization procedures and participation in 1st trimester medical and surgical abortion services in accordance with each resident’s partial participation policy.
