Lee A. Learman, M.D., Ph.D.
The Clarence E. Ehrlich
Professor and Chair

He has been honored with numerous awards for teaching, program administration and educational scholarship, including selection for membership in UCSF's Academy of Medical Educators. Dr. Learman's leadership roles include positions in national organizations and committees involved in medical education, including ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), APGO (Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics), and NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners).  He is a member of AGOS (American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society) and an oral examiner for ABOG (American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology). 

In his practice, Dr. Learman is a general obstetrician and gynecologist with a clinical specialty in diagnosing and treating chronic pelvic pain. His research interests include hysterectomy techniques and predictors, effectiveness of medical and surgical treatments, and quality of life outcomes following treatments for abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids and pelvic pain.

Dr. Learman received doctorates in medicine and social psychology from Harvard University in an M.D./Ph.D. program funded by the MacArthur Foundation. He completed his residency training at the University of California, Los Angeles.

In addition to serving as OB/GYN chair, Dr. Learman will direct the IU School of Medicine's National Center of Excellence in Women's Health.

 

  Dr. Lee A. Learman became Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Indiana University School of Medicine on August 1, 2008.

Dr. Learman came to IU from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, where he was a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences and of epidemiology and biostatistics. He joined the UCSF faculty in 1994.

At UCSF, Dr. Learman served as the OB/GYN site director for medical student and resident education at San Francisco General Hospital. He also served as the school's OB/GYN residency program director from 2000-2007, and in 2006 was appointed director of curricular affairs in the UCSF School of Medicine's Office of Graduate Medical Education.
